Women with Disabilities Group- “Happy Valentine’s Day”

On the morning of February 15, 2009, members of the Women with Disabilities Club and volunteers gathered together to celebrate Valentine’s Day and examine the hardships that people with disabilities (PWDs) face in finding love and raising a happy family. In attendance were 30 women and 8 men. Of the 30 women, only 4 were married. The group offered many speculations on why women with disabilities find it more difficult to marry than men with disabilities.

The 2010 Commemoration of the Founding of the Vietnam Women’s Union

On October 19, 2008 in Ho Chi Minh City, more than 50 people with disabilities (PWDs) joined together to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU). The event, hosted by Disability Resource and Development (DRD) in collaboration with the Disabled Youth Association of Ho Chi Minh City (Hoi Thanh Nien Khuyet Tat [HTNKT]), aimed to enhance the leadership skills of women with disabilities.

Organization Development Training

The development of an organization’s structure can greatly increase the participation of its employees and members. With this idea in mind, Disability Resource and Development (DRD) hosted an organization development training at Mong Yen Hotel on December 12, 2009. The training’s 18 participants gained knowledge of how to construct a mission, goals, and structure for their organization.

Scholarship and Mentoring Ceremony

On October 12, 2008, Disability Resource and Development (DRD) presented thirteen scholarships for students with disabilities who are currently studying at university or community college, and youth with disabilities who are not able to attend formal schooling.

“One World for All” Retreat

To celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities (March 12), Disability Resource and Development (DRD) and Ho Chi Minh City Open University hosted a retreat entitled “One World for All.” The event was sponsored by the Ford Foundation, Handicap International, and the LIN Center for Community Development and drew 500 participants.

Scholarship and Mentoring Ceremony

Since the inception of Disability Resource and Development’s scholarship and mentoring program, DRD has received many letters of application, as well as inquiries about the program and how to contribute. Many students with disabilities face additional struggles in their studies despite their hard work and determination to learn. Through this program, DRD has been able to provide scholarships for these students with the help of donors from around the world, including donations from other individuals with disabilities. DRD would like to thank its past and future donors; without your support, students with disabilities would not be able to realize their dreams.

Training: Community-Based Rehabilitation and Self-Help Groups for People with Disabilities in Thailand

The training on developing community-based rehabilitation (CBR) and self-help groups (SHG) for people with disabilities (PWDs), hosted by the Asia Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), took place from July 20-30, 2009 in Thailand. Participants included 24 individuals from 9 countries, including: Cambodia (5), Vietnam (5), Philippines (2), Myanmar (4), Laos (1), Thailand (2), Malaysia (2), Indonesia (1), and Pakistan (2). Of these participants, two were blind, two were hard of hearing, and five had a physical disability.

Fundraising Workshop : Women with Disabilities Club

To develop the fundraising and management skills of women with disabilities, Disability Resource and Development (DRD) hosted a fundraising workshop on June 21, 2009 at 228 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia in District 3.

CLB for the Hearing Impaired in HCMC

Club for the Hearing Impaired is an independent organization for people with hearing difficulties was established in 2001, which includes people who are born deaf, people with trouble hearing, and people who lost their hearing. The board members consist of volunteers who want to help each other to integrate into society.

Camp “One World for All”

In conjunction with the International Day for People with Disabilities on December 3rd: “The community understands the difficulties of people with disabilities, appreciates the value of people with disabilities, and encourages them to join into the community,” On November 28, 2009 with the sponsorship of the Ford Foundation and other NGOs in Ho Chi Minh City such as Handicap International, The Center for Community Development Support LIN, Thai Tuan Company, TNHH Tam An Company, CEEVN, N.G.O Maison Chance, Loreto and Sapuwa Water, and Disability Resource and Development coordinated a camp called “One World for All” at the Labor Center to create a field of social activities for over 600 people with and without disabilities in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring cities.
